We provided production services for the feature film Sweetness in the Belly which recently had its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. This was the largest budget film ever shot in Ethiopia and the first time that a Canadian public financed film was helmed by an African national.
The politics of co-production treaties are a relic from a colonial past. Given Ethiopia has never been colonized, official co-production treaties do not exist here. But that doesn’t mean that telling our stories with the support of international financing is impossible. Sweetness in the Belly was made with the support of Tourism Ethiopia with the goal of beginning to explore the possibilities of what a co-production financing scheme can look like in Ethiopia.
